P-Pass

NIHCOsurf is located directly inshore from P-pass. It is a passage in the barrier reef that surrounds Pohnpei that is positioned perfectly to shape North Pacific swells into world-class right hand barrels. These swells are most common from October through April. When head high or less it is a very rippable wave allowing for turns. Beyond that it is a multiple section barrel start to finish. Unlike many reef passes, P-Pass is surfable on all tides.

Pohnpei is home to several other waves, each requiring very special and uncommon combinations of wind and swell. If conditions line up, NIHCOsurf does occasionally search out alternatives to P-Pass.

Our locally owned facilities are located on the coastline directly inshore from the world-class surf of Palikir pass. This puts you less than a 15 minute boat ride from what many have described as the best right hand barrel on earth. P-Pass breaks on a barrier reef about four miles offshore, making a boat absolutely necessary.

Accommodation

NIHCOsurf is located in a quiet region about a 20 minutes drive from Kolonia town. The grounds feature individual local-style bungalows that can accommodate large groups as well as individual travelers. All rooms are private and secure. Private bathroom, drinking water, air conditioning, hot water, and refrigerator in all rooms.

All accommodations are in self-contained bungalows equipped with private bathrooms and showers, hot water, air conditioning, and refrigerator. The grounds also offer a store as well as a restaurant serving a variety of local and western dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Our restaurant and store are open daily. Our cooks can prepare a range of dishes from dock-fresh seafood to vegetarian entrees, all at a very affordable price. Wifi is available in our restaurant 24 hours a day.

Features

We operate three boats and often spend the entire day moored at the pass on our largest, while the smaller boats shuttle guests and refreshments between the pass and our dock. Being so close allows you to be first in the water and last out.

Our boat drivers are locals who grew up navigating these waters. Together with our guides, they will make sure you get the most out of every swell.

What is the best time of year for surf?
P-Pass requires North Pacific swells that occur in the months of October through April. The peak months for large swells are December through February. Early and late season typically see less wind, though swells are not as frequent.

What size boards should I bring?
If possible, you should bring several boards in the mid-size range that perform well in the barrel. On the bigger days, something that paddles well is a good idea, but full-on guns are not needed. United Airlines currently charges $200 each way from HNL-PNI or GUM-PNI for up to four boards.

Do I need to convert money?
Pohnpei uses the US$. If you need to convert currency on Pohnpei, there are banks and ATMs, but conversion rates may be better in your home country

How expensive are meals etc?
Entrees at our restaurant range from ~$5-15, Meals at restaurants in town are ~$10-20. Beers range from ~$1.25/can in a retail store to ~$3 at bars in town. Certain perishable items can be very expensive, but for the most part, general items are reasonably priced.

Should I pack anything special?
Definitely bring a good rain jacket. Pohnpei is one of the rainiest places on earth. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and sun protective clothing may also be a good idea as the sun in this region can be intense. There are no surf shops on the island so you will need to bring EVERYTHING needed to surf. Several extra leashes are recomended. Booties are unnecessary unless you like them. There are several local supermarkets and general stores but if you need someting specific, you should bring it with you.

What about safety / health?
Pohnpei is an extremely safe destination with a low crime rate and diverse poulation. It has a modern infrastructure, hospital facilities, and telecomunications. There is NO malaria on Pohnpei, but the island is home to mosquitoes and other biting insects, so bug repelant and long sleeve/long pants are occasionally useful.
